Many cities and regional governments have already made long-term commitments to cut CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, ranging from 40% to 100% reductions with an end-date ranging from 2030 – 2050 based on 1990 levels. There has also been a surge in commitments to 100% renewable or clean energies from cities and regions.

A total of 198 cities and regions have committed to getting to zero by 2050 and/or 100% renewable energy. More than 75 cities and regions made this commitment in the run up to or just after Paris. This 39% increase in new commitments demonstrates significant momentum and support from a wide range of non-state actors for achieving the long-term goal of net zero emissions by mid-century set out in the Paris Agreement.
